BREAKING: Brock Purdy, 49ers agree to five-year contract extension

Three years after being the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy has signed a record-breaking contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, marking a remarkable rise from draft afterthought to franchise cornerstone.

A league source confirmed that the 49ers are committing to Purdy with a five-year, $265 million extension — the richest contract in team history. The deal ties him with Detroit’s Jared Goff for the seventh-highest annual salary among NFL quarterbacks, averaging $53 million per year. Of the $181 million guaranteed, $165.05 million is paid out over the first three years.

Though financial details weren’t officially confirmed by Purdy’s agent, Kyle Strongin, or the team, the move cements Purdy as the face of a franchise undergoing a youth movement while still chasing its first Super Bowl win in three decades.

Purdy’s story is one of defying expectations. From Mr. Irrelevant to Pro Bowl quarterback, he has earned his spot among the league’s highest-paid players. His journey includes four postseason victories, a 2023 NFC Championship, and a narrow Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs.

The 49ers are rounding out a busy offseason, including extensions for George Kittle, the signing of first-round pick Mykel Williams, and a roster reshaped by the departure of 19 players — including nine starters. These moves helped make room for Purdy’s well-deserved payday.

Throughout the offseason, team executives — owner Jed York, GM John Lynch, and coach Kyle Shanahan — have consistently backed Purdy. York called him a top-10 quarterback, adding, “We want him here for a long, long time.”

Purdy, now 25, made under $1 million per year on his rookie contract and was entering the final year of that deal. His 2025 salary increased due to a Pro Bowl selection, but it pales in comparison to his new contract.

The franchise’s prior big-money quarterback deals — such as those for Jimmy Garoppolo and Colin Kaepernick — didn’t yield long-term results. And the high-risk investment in Trey Lance, for whom the team gave up three first-round picks, ultimately led nowhere. Lance started just four games before being traded to Dallas.

Purdy, on the other hand, gave the team everything they’d hoped for — and more. Despite a serious elbow injury in the 2022 NFC Championship loss, he came back to set the 49ers’ single-season passing record (4,280 yards) in 2023 and led two playoff comebacks before the Super Bowl loss.

Injuries were still a concern last season, including a sore shoulder and another scare to his surgically repaired elbow. But Purdy avoided contract drama, opting instead for a quiet, focused offseason, unlike recent teammates like Deebo Samuel or Nick Bosa.

“I’m not someone who wants drama,” Purdy said earlier this year. “I know I’m the guy for this team, and I’m here to help us reach our goals.”

Purdy holds a 23-13 record as a regular-season starter, including a 10-0 start to his career. Since a Christmas 2023 loss to Baltimore, he’s gone 9-11, including a 2-1 postseason run this past year.

From Mr. Irrelevant to franchise quarterback, Purdy’s story now comes with both legacy and a lucrative reward — and the 49ers are betting big that his next chapter includes a Super Bowl victory.
