Bianca Costea has announced via Instagram that she will be transferring to Virginia Tech for the 2025–2026 season. After spending two years at Louisville, the Romanian sprinter still has two seasons of eligibility left.
Costea joined the Louisville program in the fall of 2023. As a freshman, she did not compete at the ACC Championships but posted a personal-best 48.96 in the 100-yard freestyle at the Louisville First Chance Meet. She also didn’t swim at ACCs in her sophomore year but recorded a season-best 22.87 in the 50 free at the Louisville Last Chance Meet.
Her top short-course yard (SCY) times include:
- 50 free: 22.56
- 100 free: 48.96
- 200 free: 1:50.13

Virginia Tech’s women’s team placed 9th out of 15 teams at the 2025 ACC Championships with 411.5 points, falling about 50 points short of Pitt in 8th. Louisville’s women’s team, by contrast, finished 3rd. Virginia Tech also finished 20th at the 2025 NCAA Championships.
To advance to finals at ACCs this year, swimmers needed at least a 22.41 in the 50 free and a 48.72 in the 100 free. Although Costea is slightly outside scoring range, her times could still prove valuable in relays. This past season, her 50 and 100 free times would’ve ranked third among Hokies swimmers. Virginia Tech placed 7th in the 200 free relay and 6th in the 400 free relay at ACCs. Team leader Carmen Weiler Sastre, who posted the top sprint free times during the season, did not compete in the 50 or 100 free at ACCs or NCAAs.
