Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore hinted at some positive news Monday night with a social media post, and on Tuesday, four-star tight end Matt Ludwig delivered by announcing his commitment to the Wolverines.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound prospect made his decision public following a second recent visit from tight ends coach Steve Casula to Billings, Montana. That extra effort paid off, as Ludwig — ranked No. 175 overall and the No. 10 tight end in the 2026 class by the On3 Industry Ranking — shared his commitment on social media. He’s a consensus four-star recruit and sits inside the top 100 in On3’s individual rankings for the 2026 cycle.

Matt Ludwig is a rare athletic talent and a standout three-sport athlete. At Billings West, he occasionally lines up at quarterback, even posting a 100-yard rushing game from the wildcat formation. His speed is especially impressive for a tight end — he clocked an 11.12 in the 100-meter dash this spring.

For comparison, Colston Loveland — a recent first-round NFL Draft pick by the Chicago Bears — ran a 12.54 in the same event during his junior year. Ludwig’s athleticism also shows up in his stats: he’s rushed for 361 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and scored six touchdowns — numbers not typically associated with the tight end position.

As a pass-catcher, he’s been just as productive, totaling 89 receptions for 1,263 yards, with 880 of those yards coming in his junior season alone. Michigan secured his commitment over a strong group of contenders. Texas Tech made the final cut, while Notre Dame and Georgia were both expected to host official visits. Tennessee was another major player in his recruitment.

In the end, Michigan came out on top — likely helped by the program’s track record of developing tight ends like Loveland and others who’ve made the leap to the NFL. Ludwig will also have the opportunity to team up with elite quarterback commit Bryce Underwood, making Ann Arbor an even more appealing destination.
