BREAKING: Bills Dion Dawkins Hard Work Rewarded With Major Announcement

Buffalo Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins has long advocated for offensive linemen to receive more recognition, and that push is finally paying off. The NFL announced it will debut a new honor—the “Protector of the Year” award—starting next season, marking a significant step toward highlighting the contributions of linemen who often go unnoticed.

Among all the roles on a football team, the offensive line tends to be the most underappreciated. These five players in the trenches rarely appear in highlight reels or stat sheets, and their efforts are often overlooked by the casual fan.

Still, their importance is unquestionable at every level of football. Dawkins has been a vocal proponent for offensive linemen to get their due, and now his efforts are being rewarded. The league credited Dawkins and retired lineman Andrew Whitworth with helping bring the award to life, following a campaign Dawkins launched earlier this year during the Bills’ playoff run.

“Offensive linemen don’t get awards for excellence,” Dawkins said. “There’s no ‘Protector of the Year’—but I’m knocking on doors to make it happen. I want it in place before I retire, because there are so many greats out there. We have rushing titles and passing titles—but all those reflect the work of the O-line.”

While linemen have long been recognized through the Pro Bowl, All-Pro honors, and Hall of Fame induction, this marks the first time they’ll receive a dedicated, individual award. It’s a change that many consider overdue—and thanks to Dawkins’ persistence, it will benefit offensive linemen for years to come.
