CINCINNATI — In a decisive move to strengthen their relief corps heading into the final stretch of the 2024 season, the Cincinnati Reds have signed veteran right-handed reliever Tyler Matson to a major league deal, the club announced on Sunday morning. The deal is reportedly for one year and $2.7 million, with performance incentives that could push the total value north of $4 million.
Matson, 36, brings over a decade of MLB experience to a Reds bullpen that has battled inconsistency and injuries throughout the year. Known for his high-velocity fastball and effective slider, Matson last pitched for the Seattle Mariners in 2023, where he posted a 3.38 ERA over 49 appearances and struck out 62 batters in 53.1 innings.
“Tyler is a proven arm who has been in some big spots over his career,” Reds General Manager Nick Krall said in a press release. “He adds experience, toughness, and a late-inning presence we’ve been looking for.”

The signing comes as the Reds continue to fight for a postseason berth in a tight NL Central race. The bullpen has been a weak point, ranking 22nd in the league in ERA (4.41) and 24th in strikeout rate. Matson is expected to slot into a setup role immediately, potentially bridging the gap to closer Alexis Díaz.
Matson, a former All-Star in 2020 with the Colorado Rockies, has also pitched for the Yankees and Diamondbacks. He missed the first half of this season recovering from offseason elbow soreness but held private showcases for multiple teams over the past month. Cincinnati ultimately won out, reportedly beating interest from the Giants and Twins.

“I’ve always loved pitching at Great American Ball Park,” Matson said in a statement. “I’m ready to contribute and help this team make a push. It’s a great group of guys, and I can’t wait to get going.”
Matson will join the Reds in time for their upcoming homestand against the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-hander Jose Acosta for assignment.
