Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy recently addressed the possibility of Kumar Rocker transitioning to a bullpen role as the team’s closer.
ARLINGTON — Bochy has shown a willingness to shake things up this season in search of better results on the field.
During the Rangers’ last road trip, Bochy moved stars Adolis García and Marcus Semien down in the batting order, hitting García eighth and Semien ninth. Ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, the lineup remained the same.
Rookie Alejandro Osuna, making just his second MLB start, was slotted ahead of them in the order.

While the batting lineup has drawn attention, the Rangers are also exploring changes in the bullpen. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Texas is “seriously” considering shifting Kumar Rocker — currently on the injured list — into a closer role upon his return.
What Bruce Bochy Had to Say About Kumar Rocker Report
When asked on Monday about the idea of Kumar Rocker becoming the Rangers’ closer, manager Bruce Bochy seemed surprised by the notion, saying it was the first he’d heard of it and that no such discussions had taken place.
“No, we haven’t talked about him closing,” Bochy told reporters. “We have talked about, you know, if we need help in the bullpen that he would be an option. So, when he gets ready, OK. But we’re going to stay flexible there.”
Bochy noted that Rocker is scheduled for another rehab outing this week, though the exact day was uncertain. In his most recent appearance, Rocker threw three innings for Double-A Frisco last Wednesday, suggesting the team still sees him in a multi-inning role — at least for now.
The Rangers’ bullpen has been in a state of flux, with six different relievers notching saves this season. Veteran Chris Martin is currently sidelined with shoulder fatigue, while early-season closer Luke Jackson has not registered a save in May. Shawn Armstrong has taken on closing duties more recently, converting two of four opportunities, and Robert Garcia has stepped up as a reliable setup man.
Throughout the season, Bochy has emphasized adaptability in managing his bullpen. Jackson’s usage is a clear example — after serving as closer in April, he pitched the sixth inning on Sunday to protect a narrow lead.
“I told him, ‘I’m going to use you in different parts of the game where we feel like we may need you,’” Bochy said of his conversation with Jackson. “I just want some flexibility with the matchups that we have.”
That same philosophy could apply to Rocker. While the team may see him as a bullpen contributor once he’s healthy, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be stepping into the closer role. First, Rocker needs to finish his rehab and prove he’s ready for big league action.
