Last summer, the St. Louis Blues made a bold move by signing Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg—then restricted free agents—to double offer sheets, capitalizing on the Edmonton Oilers’ salary cap issues. General Manager Doug Armstrong used this unconventional strategy in hopes of reigniting the Blues’ playoff push.
Now, after both Holloway and Broberg delivered standout performances during the 2024-25 season, the question arises: Have they done enough to earn long-term contracts? With their impressive development, the two could become foundational players in St. Louis. Will Armstrong and his successor-in-waiting, Alexander Steen, commit to large extensions?
Tune in to the latest episode of Note News, where we break down possible contract extensions for Broberg and Holloway and examine other important roster decisions facing the Blues after the 2024-25 campaign.

What the Blues got from Holloway and Broberg in 2024-25
In a year where expectations were low, Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg emerged as two of the Blues’ top performers. Alongside Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou, and Colton Parayko, they made up the team’s five most impactful skaters during the 2024-25 season.
Holloway appeared in 77 games, becoming a vital piece of the Blues’ high-powered second line. His combination of speed, physicality, and strong two-way play meshed perfectly with the team’s identity, resulting in an impressive 26 goals and 37 assists. Many believe that had Holloway been available for the first-round playoff series against the Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis could have ended their three-year playoff drought with a series win.
Broberg, meanwhile, played 68 games, spending most of his time on the second defensive pairing. Although his offensive production slowed after a hot start—he finished with eight goals and 21 assists—he impressed with his defensive prowess. His exceptional skating allowed him to close gaps quickly and disrupt plays before they materialized. In transition, Broberg excelled at moving the puck up the ice and helping the Blues establish offensive zone pressure.

Should the Blues sign Holloway and Broberg to huge extensions?
Simply put, the answer is “yes”—Holloway and Broberg are exactly the kind of players that winning franchises are built around. As young contributors already making a significant impact at the NHL level, they’ve helped fast-track the Blues’ return to playoff contention.
According to the Net Rating Model from The Athletic‘s Dom Luszczyszyn, both players far exceeded the value of their current contracts. Holloway, earning $2 million, performed at the level of a $9.1 million player. Broberg, with a $4.6 million salary, delivered play worth approximately $9 million.
This offseason, Doug Armstrong and Alexander Steen should pursue long-term deals for both players—similar in structure to the contracts given to Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou. At just 23 years old, Holloway and Broberg are still developing. Locking them in now could give the Blues a major value advantage as these players continue to grow and potentially outperform their future contracts.
