REPORT: SF Giants get big boost at first base with sluggers return

The San Francisco Giants have had a tough time generating offense from the first base position this season. However, that might improve soon with the potential return of right-handed power hitter Jerar Encarnacion from injury, possibly as early as the team’s upcoming home stand.

According to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle, who shared the update on social media, manager Bob Melvin indicated that Encarnacion could rejoin the lineup once the Giants are back in San Francisco following their nine-game road trip.

SF Giants could get big offensive boost with slugger’s return

Jerar Encarnacion has been sidelined since March after fracturing his hand during a diving play in the outfield during spring training. The injury was unfortunate, as he had been swinging the bat well in Arizona and looked poised to secure a roster spot, whether in the corner outfield, at first base, or as a designated hitter.

After undergoing surgery, the initial recovery timeline was set at about eight weeks. That period is nearly up, and according to San Francisco Chronicle reporter Shayna Rubin, the plan is for Encarnacion to get around a week’s worth of rehab games with Triple-A Sacramento before rejoining the big-league club.

There was a brief moment a few weeks back when it looked like he might begin a rehab stint, but he only appeared in two games. This time, however, there’s optimism he’s truly close. It’s possible the Giants were just being extra careful to prevent any setbacks.

Jerar Encarnación might be the power bat the Giants need - The Athletic

Encarnacion flashed his raw power last season, hitting .248 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 35 games, and he carried that same power into spring training this year. The hope is that he can quickly find his rhythm during his rehab games and be ready to contribute when he rejoins the Giants.

The timing couldn’t be better. The Giants have been desperate for production at first base, with LaMonte Wade Jr. struggling mightily—his batting average hovering well below .200 and looking completely out of sync at the plate. While there’s been talk of giving Casey Schmitt more reps at first to spark some offense, Encarnacion offers the kind of traditional power threat the team has lacked at the position.

If he’s fully healthy, Encarnacion could provide the offensive jolt the Giants desperately need. Here’s hoping he begins his rehab assignment this week and makes a smooth return to the lineup.
