The Cardinals have become one of the more intriguing stories of the 2025 MLB season.
After the 2024 campaign ended, there was immediate speculation that St. Louis would overhaul its roster. Despite finishing above .500 last year, the team spoke of a need to “reset” during the offseason, fueling expectations of major trades involving stars like Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, and Willson Contreras. However, none of those players were dealt.
Heading into 2025, the Cardinals kept much of the same core intact. That didn’t stop a wave of trade rumors from surfacing, with social media buzzing about potential blockbuster deals.

But things have shifted. The Cardinals found their stride in May, improving to 31-24 and trailing only the Cubs in the standings. What once seemed like a surefire fire sale now looks less likely. In a recent interview with Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, team president John Mozeliak suggested the front office might not move into sell mode after all.
“After the last few years, having some positive energy around the team matters,” Mozeliak said. “This season was always about giving players opportunities and seeing where that took us. A lot of people pegged us as sellers — whether that meant in the offseason or at the trade deadline — but with how we’re performing, that outlook might be changing.”
