The St. Louis Cardinals are placing young outfielder Jordan Walker on the injured list, and manager Oliver Marmol remains optimistic about a quick return.

“I don’t think it’ll be more than the 10 days,” Marmol told ESPN. “We should have him back fairly soon.”

Walker is sidelined with wrist inflammation and has been moved to the 10-day IL. The timing is unfortunate, as he’s been on a hot streak—batting .333 with a homer and 10 RBIs over his last 12 games.

After an impressive rookie campaign in 2023 where he hit .276 with 51 RBIs, Walker struggled earlier this year, batting just .201 before heating up recently.

To fill the roster spot, the Cardinals have called up Ryan Vilade from Triple-A.

The Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in baseball

The St. Louis Cardinals have been on a roll lately, and Jordan Walker has played a key role in their recent success. Thanks to a strong showing in May, the team climbed to second place in the National League Central.

Walker’s absence is a setback for the Cardinals, as he’s widely regarded as one of their most promising young hitters. With him sidelined, players like Victor Scott and others in the lineup will be expected to step up.

Ryan Vilade, called up from Triple-A, could provide a boost. He’s posted a .280 average with five home runs in the minors this year.

The Cardinals, one of baseball’s most storied franchises with 11 World Series titles, are aiming to return to the postseason for the first time since 2022—the last year they also claimed the NL Central crown.

St. Louis, currently holding a 33-25 record, is set to face the Texas Rangers on Sunday, with first pitch at 1:05 p.m. ET.
