San Francisco Giants team president Buster Posey is prioritizing practicality over personal ties in his front office decisions.

On Wednesday, the Giants made several tough roster moves, most notably designating veteran first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment. Taking his spot on the roster is former first-round pick Dominic Smith, according to ESPN.

Wade, 31, had spent five seasons with the Giants, posting a .240 batting average, a .746 OPS, and hitting 52 home runs over 488 games. Though he was a valuable contributor in 2024, his performance has sharply declined this season, with a .546 OPS and -1.1 WAR prompting the move.

While the decision may seem abrupt, Wade’s lack of production in 2025 made the outcome foreseeable. It’s especially notable considering Wade was once a teammate of Posey’s—meaning the Giants’ top decision-maker had to cut ties with a former friend. It’s a move that underscores Posey’s resolve and focus—qualities not every former player in a front office role demonstrates.

Posey addressed the decision publicly, expressing hope that Wade can revive his career with a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
