James Cook’s Future with Bills in Doubt Amid Contract Dispute and Trade Rumors

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is facing growing uncertainty about his future with the team as a contract standoff intensifies. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Cook is expected to sit out for the foreseeable future unless he receives a contract extension that meets his demands.

The 24-year-old is reportedly seeking a deal worth around $15 million annually—a number that Bills management appears unwilling to match. With negotiations at a standstill, a new contract doesn’t seem imminent, casting doubt on Cook’s availability as training camp approaches.

Cook is coming off a breakout season, notching 207 carries for 1,009 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns across 16 games. Drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Georgia, Cook became the Bills’ lead back after Devin Singletary departed for Houston in 2023. He capitalized on the opportunity, becoming the first Bills running back to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season since LeSean McCoy.

While Cook has proven himself a valuable weapon in Buffalo’s offense, the front office appears hesitant to invest top-tier money after just two strong seasons. With Cook set to become a free agent in 2025, it’s no surprise he’s pushing for an extension now—but without significant movement, a holdout seems likely. Cook is not expected to report to mandatory minicamp next week.

The situation leaves Buffalo in a bind. While the team managed to lock down quarterback Josh Allen with a major contract, finding room to meet Cook’s demands could prove challenging. If the standoff persists, a trade may become a real possibility.

Trade Market Heating Up

Two teams could emerge as top suitors should the Bills decide to explore trade options.

Bills James Cook Contract

Los Angeles Chargers: Despite signing Najee Harris in free agency, the Chargers selected Omarion Hampton in the first round of this year’s draft—proof that new head coach Jim Harbaugh is building a ground-heavy offense. With cap space to spare and a desire to build around Justin Herbert, Los Angeles could offer Cook a contract that Buffalo won’t. Although the Bills may hesitate to trade him within the AFC, the Chargers’ need and fit could make them a compelling option.

Washington Commanders: Washington may not be in urgent need of a running back, but their current backfield leaves much to be desired. Austin Ekeler’s durability has been in question, and Brian Robinson Jr. has delivered middling production. With the team already aggressive in their offseason—trading for Deebo Samuel and drafting QB Jayden Daniels—a move for Cook would align with their win-now mentality. Cook could be the final piece in what’s shaping up to be a dynamic offense.

With training camp fast approaching, the clock is ticking. Whether Buffalo caves to Cook’s demands, or begins exploring trade scenarios, the coming days could be pivotal in determining the next chapter of his NFL journey.
