DETROIT — Jake Rogers is well aware of the competition for playing time at catcher.
Still, that hasn’t stopped the Detroit Tigers player from delivering key contributions as his team gains momentum.
After spending more than a month on the injured list, Rogers missed significant time, during which 26-year-old catcher Dillon Dingler stepped up impressively. When Rogers returned, he initially struggled at the plate, going just 1-for-20.
However, Rogers showed his value once again with a two-hit, two-RBI outing while skillfully managing pitcher Keider Montero in crucial moments of Detroit’s 11-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
“It’s clear we’ve got another catcher who’s been outstanding, and since I got hurt and came back, it’s been a shared role,” Rogers said after the game.

“It feels great to connect with the ball and have quality at-bats. I’ve been working hard with the hitting coaches, figuring out what adjustments I need to make, so having a strong day at the plate is very rewarding.”
One strong game doesn’t define Rogers’ season, but it was satisfying for the veteran to perform well in important situations.

Behind the plate, Rogers was steady as ever, helping Montero escape tough spots with runners on the corners in the first inning and bases loaded in the fourth, allowing no runs to score.
Offensively, Rogers hit a double in the fourth and earned a timely walk to load the bases during a pivotal four-run sixth inning. He capped off his night with a two-run single to left field in the eighth.
“Rogers is fantastic — a great teammate, catcher, and hitter. He had a rough patch, but it’s great to see him bounce back,” said outfielder Riley Greene.
Though Dingler is making a strong case for more playing time with a .283/.313/.455 line, seven homers, and 29 RBIs this year, Rogers reminded manager A.J. Hinch why the veteran deserves his role.
“I’m really happy for Jake because everything he’s gone through this year seems to have come full circle,” Hinch said. “He’s helped pitchers get through innings, made timely mound visits that could change the game, and swung the bat well with big hits and an important walk.
“We all need to remember he’s a very good player, and we rely on him heavily. When he has nights like this, he can go home knowing he played a big part in the win.”
