“Rajai Davis represents everything that I love about baseball,” Horton shared in the announcement. “Community, passion, and sacrifice. I am proud to see his name on the 2025 Horton Award. He had a great playing career, but I know his impact on the game is just beginning.”
As noted on the Tigers’ official site, the award—named after Detroit icon Willie Horton—recognizes African Americans who have helped strengthen baseball’s legacy within the African American community and contributed to the rich history of the Tigers. Previous honorees include Torii Hunter, Gary Sheffield, and Lou Whitaker.
Davis, who played for eight teams over a 14-year MLB career, made 246 appearances across two seasons with Detroit. During his time with the Tigers, he posted a .272 batting average with 16 home runs, 81 RBIs, 54 stolen bases, and 44 walks in 802 at-bats—solid numbers that energized fans. But it’s his impact beyond the field that continues to resonate in the Motor City.

A native of Norwich, Connecticut, Davis has remained active in community work and youth baseball initiatives throughout Detroit, earning admiration not only as a player but as a person.
Davis received the award at the Tigers’ Black Diamond Dinner and quickly shared his appreciation:
“Willie Horton has supported me since day one,” Davis wrote. “His legacy in Detroit and in baseball is unmatched. I am truly honored to receive the 2025 Horton African American Legacy Award.”
Still beloved by Tigers fans more than a decade after his last appearance with the team, Davis may very well be honored again in Detroit in the years to come.
