WASHINGTON — Gleyber Torres and his family made a major move this past offseason, leaving New York after seven years with the Yankees to join the Tigers in Detroit. So far in 2025, that decision has paid off.
The veteran second baseman has been named an All-Star for the third time in his career — and for the first time as a Tiger — thanks to being voted in by the fans.

At 28, Torres has fully embraced his new city, taking time to learn about Detroit and its passionate sports culture. Now, he’ll proudly represent the Tigers as the American League’s starting second baseman.
“Before signing, I really looked into the team and the city,” Torres said Thursday before going 2-for-4 with an RBI in Detroit’s 11-7 loss to the Nationals. “I followed their season last year, and I’ve learned a bit about the Lions and Red Wings, too. The fans here give amazing support. Representing them at the All-Star Game means a lot — and we’re focused on finishing strong in the second half.”
Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit on December 27, as the Tigers looked to build on their playoff run that ended in Game 5 of the ALDS against Cleveland.

“We absolutely believed Gleyber could be an All-Star second baseman,” joked manager A.J. Hinch. “In all seriousness, we thought he was the right guy at the right time. He came in on a one-year deal, brought veteran leadership, and both sides really invested in making this work. He bet on himself, and it’s working out.”
Torres will be joined at the All-Star Game by teammates Javier Báez and Riley Greene, both also selected by fan vote. The trio is hopeful that ace Tarik Skubal will join them in Atlanta, depending on the results of the player vote.
“It’s a huge honor,” Torres said. “This year’s felt extra special because of the group we have. I’m excited to share the moment with Báez and Greene — and hopefully a few more teammates, too. Representing Detroit at the All-Star Game will mean a lot.”

Torres has been a key contributor to the Tigers’ success so far, helping them lead the AL Central. In 75 games, he’s batting .282 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs — a strong contrast to the .221 average, six homers, and 26 RBIs he posted at the same point with the Yankees last season.
“Gleyber’s been excellent,” Hinch added. “He still has room to grow, and we’ll keep pushing him. But after spending his whole career in one place, it’s impressive how well he’s adapted here. It’s been a great match for both sides.”
