CLEVELAND — In a series of strategic procedural moves on Sunday, the Detroit Tigers made adjustments to their 40-man roster, swapping out left-handed pitchers in an effort to optimize their pitching depth as they prepare for the stretch run of the 2025 season.

The team announced that left-hander Sean Guenther, who recently underwent hip surgery, was recalled from Triple-A Toledo. However, rather than being added to the active roster, Guenther was immediately placed on the 60-day injured list. Guenther had previously been sidelined on the minor league injured list, but by promoting him to the MLB roster and transferring him to the long-term IL, the Tigers were able to strategically create an open spot on the 40-man roster.

That newly available roster spot was quickly filled by fellow southpaw PJ Poulin, who was selected to the 40-man roster. The 29-year-old left-hander has been having a strong season in the minors and now becomes a potential option out of the bullpen for Detroit moving forward. This procedural juggling reflects the Tigers’ ongoing efforts to manage their roster depth carefully, particularly as they deal with injuries and position themselves for a possible postseason push.
