Gleyber Torres, now in his first season with the Detroit Tigers after signing a one-year, $15 million deal, has brought veteran presence to a promising young team. The 28-year-old second baseman made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2018, quickly becoming a standout and earning All-Star nods in each of his first two seasons.
However, his time in New York came to an end after the 2024 season, due to inconsistent postseason performances and defensive struggles—he led the league with 18 errors. The Yankees opted not to re-sign him.

Now in Detroit, Torres has revitalized his career and earned his third All-Star selection. Interestingly, it was Yankees manager Aaron Boone—chosen to manage the AL squad after New York’s World Series appearance—who named Torres the leadoff hitter for the All-Star Game. Torres admitted before the game that Boone’s choice caught him off guard.
So far in 2025, Torres has helped guide the Tigers to MLB’s best record at 59–38 going into the break. In 84 games, he’s posted a .281 batting average with an .812 OPS, nine home runs, and 45 RBIs.

Defensively, he’s committed just three errors—a dramatic improvement from the previous year—suggesting that a fresh start in Detroit may have been just what he needed.
