The Detroit Tigers enter the All-Star break with the best record in Major League Baseball, but their bullpen remains a major concern. In a troubling stretch, Detroit’s relievers gave up 15 runs in the ninth inning alone during their recent three-game series against the Seattle Mariners—raising red flags for the second half of the season.
With the bullpen struggling, the Tigers are reportedly targeting two standout arms from a division rival. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Detroit is showing strong interest in Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. Duran, 27, was a surprising All-Star snub despite a dominant 1.66 ERA across 43.1 innings. Jax, 30, has rebounded from a rough start to the season and currently holds a 3.92 ERA over 41.1 innings.
Currently ranked 21st in bullpen ERA, the Tigers would benefit greatly from a high-leverage arm like Duran to anchor the back end. Jax, who had a strong 2024 campaign, might also benefit from a fresh start in a new environment. However, Minnesota’s willingness to deal either pitcher remains uncertain as the team sits just four games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.
If the Twins choose to stay in the postseason hunt, Detroit will need to explore other options. But with October baseball in sight, the Tigers are actively searching for shutdown relievers—and Duran could be the difference-maker they’re looking for as the trade deadline approaches.
