The Texas Rangers are playing solid baseball and sit above the .500 mark — a sign that they’re in the mix for a playoff push. With the MLB Trade Deadline approaching, the Rangers could look to be buyers, and they’re also set to receive a boost from within as a power-hitting outfielder nears a return.
Joc Pederson, however, has struggled mightily since joining the Rangers. The veteran slugger is batting just .131 over 122 at-bats and has only managed two home runs this season. Known for his ability to provide left-handed power, Pederson has been unable to deliver in that role for Texas. He endured a particularly rough stretch where he couldn’t make consistent contact at all.
Still, manager Bruce Bochy says Pederson is nearing a return.
“With the way he looked today, I don’t see it being a long rehab,” Bochy said.
Pederson took live batting practice Tuesday and is scheduled to do so again Wednesday. He’ll then head to the minors for a brief rehab stint before rejoining the big-league club. The Rangers hope he can provide an impact down the stretch and be a key contributor, almost like a trade acquisition from within.
A veteran of 11 seasons, Pederson made his debut with the Dodgers in 2014 and has 211 career home runs, including 23 last year with Arizona. This season marks his first in the American League, and he’s had to adjust to new pitching.

Bochy, who faced Pederson frequently while managing the Giants, believes in his potential — and despite Pederson’s struggles, the Rangers are giving him another shot. With a two-year, \$37 million contract signed this offseason, Texas needs to get him on the field and contributing.
