The Detroit Tigers need to make roster upgrades before the MLB trade deadline, even though they currently hold the best record in baseball. Their lineup is strong, but third base remains a weak spot following Alex Bregman’s offseason signing with the Boston Red Sox.
While pursuing high-level talent to boost the offense would be ideal, the bullpen poses even greater concerns. Still, could the Tigers make a move for a Gold Glove-winning third baseman?
Detroit Tigers could look into Baltimore third baseman Ramon Urias

Detroit Free Press reporter Evan Petzold recently shared a potential solution for the Tigers’ third base situation on his Days of Roar podcast. While the option may not be a game-changer, it could bolster the team’s infield depth and defensive stability.

“I think you put all the chips in,” Petzold said about the Tigers’ trade deadline approach. “But do the Tigers go a different route? Maybe they go the Ramón Urías route—a right-handed hitting infielder who performs well against left-handed pitching. He’d be an upgrade over someone like Andy Ibáñez. These aren’t flashy moves, but they could support long-term sustainability, even if they don’t offer the best shot at a 2025 World Series.”

Urías, 31, won a Gold Glove at third base three years ago and owns a .725 OPS versus lefties this season. He began 2025 strong with a .938 OPS but has struggled with inconsistency since, especially in May and early July, though he hit well in April and June.

While the ideal scenario for Detroit would be acquiring a top-tier third baseman, the trade market doesn’t offer many elite options. Urías would be a low-cost target who brings valuable defense and productive at-bats against left-handers—both of which could help shore up the Tigers’ infield.
