The New York Yankees, who are vying for a postseason berth, will play the St. Louis Cardinals in a pivotal weekend series. They start the series four games behind the New York Mets for the last slot in the Wild Card race, and they will attempt to remain afloat. They have endured some heartbreaking losses, but they have also won series against some excellent teams, including as the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers.
St. Louis lost their series and dropped to 16 games behind in the National League Central division after blowing a 5-2 lead against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. For St. Louis to turn things around and remain in the postseason chase, a lot must go right. They have had trouble defeating some of this season’s underperforming clubs.
The Cardinals have been losing since they were defeated by the Texas Rangers on June 1. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold noted on X how dire things had become.
“Since June 1, are 2-2-1 in series vs. teams with winning records today, including a series win vs. [the Los Angeles Dodgers],” Goold stated.
“We have a 1-6 record in series against teams with losing records since June 1, including a 0–2 record against [the Rockies] tonight.

The Cardinals are now 61-61 on the season and virtually out of the running after Wednesday’s defeat. Although St. Louis was a seller at the trade deadline, shipping rental relievers Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz, and Phil Maton to other contenders and presumably committing to a rebuild, the Wild Card is still a possibility.
Regretfully, it may be some time before the Cardinals can compete once more. Even though they have defeated some of the best teams in Major League Baseball in recent series, they don’t compare favorably to them.
The Yankees are a challenge for St. Louis to try to get back on track before traveling to play the Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays, but they haven’t played their best baseball lately.
Busch Stadium will not host October baseball for the third year in a row if the Cardinals miss the postseason. At the end of the season, Chaim Bloom will succeed John Mozeliak as president of baseball operations. What Bloom does will be intriguing to watch.
However, they are not now on the correct track.
