Although they are only 5.5 games behind, the St. Louis Cardinals are still in the running for a playoff berth and might challenge for the last wild card place. Unfortunately, such a run is improbable given the roster’s ailments.
The Cardinals’ injuries this season are a major factor in their poor postseason prospects, aside from selling at the trade deadline. Nolan Arenado is listed as injured, while Willson Contreras has missed a couple games.
Regretfully, Arenado isn’t the only player on the Cardinals’ disabled list, as per their announcement. Due to a left groin injury, Brendan Donovan is being placed on the disabled list with effect from August 15.
Donovan Hits Injured List Amid Strong Season
Given Donovan’s All-Star season, this trade is a devastating blow to both the Cardinals and him. Despite participating in almost every game this season, he is currently on the disabled list despite being one of the team’s better hitters.

With nine home runs, 45 RBIs, 118 hits, 25 doubles, 57 runs scored, and a strong.750 OPS, the 28-year-old has been a tremendous asset for the Cardinals, hitting.279 on the season.
It was perhaps Donovan’s greatest season in the Majors, and he was in the middle of his fourth. He had a slightly higher OPS in 2024 (.759), but this season he has been an all-around fantastic performer.
He has contributed significantly to the squad’s performance in 2025 and now has the fourth-highest OPS on the team. However, he is currently on the 10-day injured list and will be out for a while.
His replacement, Jose Fermin, has only played in 12 games and made three starts, but he has a 1.009 OPS and a.350 batting average.
Due to a groin injury, Donovan gets placed on the injured list and will be out for a while. Donovan may make a comeback later in the season, but he probably won’t have much more playing time left with little over a month to go.
