Rangers' Jacob deGrom returns after skipped start, but falls short of his own expectations

Jacob deGrom allowed two runs over five innings with seven strikeouts against the Angels but still hasn’t picked up a win in more than a month. After the game, he offered a candid self-assessment to ESPN.

“Tonight I just wasn’t consistent at all,” deGrom admitted. “Missed a lot with my sliders, missed with fastballs, and the first pitch of the game went right down the middle. I was all over the place, and that was frustrating.”

The star right-hander had been managing some shoulder fatigue prior to his return and uneven outing, which may have impacted his performance. Texas will need him at his best if they hope to contend for the postseason.

Despite Monday’s struggles, deGrom earned his first All-Star nod since 2021 this year and owns a 2.79 ERA through 25 starts — his most since 2019. He’s logged 145.1 innings and struck out 155 batters, showcasing his elite form when healthy.

A two-time Cy Young Award winner, deGrom remains one of the premier pitchers in baseball, though injuries have hampered him in recent seasons. While he didn’t have his best stuff Monday and lacked any run support, he’s been a key bright spot for Texas throughout 2025.

The Rangers will look to rebound in Tuesday night’s rematch against the Angels, with first pitch set for 8:05 PM EST at Globe Life Field.
