September call-ups are almost here, and Cincinnati Reds fans are eager to see who will be added to the active roster in the coming days. While teams usually promote one pitcher and one position player, the main limitation is that rosters can carry only 14 pitchers.

With the Reds’ bullpen stretched to its limits, it wouldn’t be surprising if Cincinnati follows that pattern. Fans are hoping top prospect Sal Stewart makes the jump this year, but there’s also room for a compelling comeback story.

Tejay Antone is making his way back from yet another elbow surgery—the third of his career—after an injury last spring. Remarkably, he’s currently on a rehab assignment with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Could the Reds give Antone a chance to achieve a nearly miraculous return to the Major Leagues this season?

Reds pitcher Tejay Antone’s remarkable comeback sets up a September call-up nobody expected
Heading into Sunday’s action, Tejay Antone had made six appearances in the minors this season—a notable accomplishment in itself. But Reds fans know his ultimate goal: returning to the Major Leagues before the 2025 season ends.

In those six outings—against competition less challenging than he’d face in the big leagues—Antone has pitched 7⅓ innings, giving up just one run on seven hits. Affectionately nicknamed “Captain Hook,” he has recorded eight strikeouts, including a three-strikeout performance last week against the St. Louis Cardinals’ High-A affiliate.

A September 1 call-up might be ambitious. After more than a year away, the timing may not align for him to immediately rejoin the big league roster. His last appearance was on April 7, 2024, when he didn’t even face a batter.
If the Reds are out of playoff contention with a week left in the season, adding Antone would be an easy decision. In the thick of the NL Wild Card race, however, it could be tougher to put him in such a high-pressure situation—but it’s one he would undoubtedly embrace.
