The New York Mets have bolstered their bullpen once again.

On Thursday, the team announced the waiver claim of veteran reliever Wander Suero from the Atlanta Braves, who had designated him for assignment earlier on Tuesday.

Suero, 33, began his professional career when the Washington Nationals signed him as an undrafted free agent in May 2010. He spent three seasons in the Nationals’ Dominican Republic development system before moving through the minor leagues, appearing in 212 games over eight seasons. Suero finally made his MLB debut on April 30, 2018, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.59 ERA, 47 strikeouts, and a 1.22 WHIP across 47.2 innings.

He followed that strong start by leading Washington in appearances and relief innings in 2019, finishing 6-9 with a 4.54 ERA, 81 strikeouts, and a 1.26 WHIP in 71.1 innings during the Nationals’ World Series-winning season. In the shortened 2020 campaign, Suero went 2-0 with a 3.80 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.

Suero struggled in his final year with the Nationals in 2021, recording a 2-3 mark with a 6.33 ERA over 22 games. Washington non-tendered him that November, making him a free agent.

He then moved between several organizations. The Angels signed him to a minor league deal in March 2022, but he didn’t appear in any MLB games, struggling in Triple-A Salt Lake with a 6.08 ERA and 15 strikeouts. After his release in July, Suero played for the Sultanes de Monterrey in the Mexican League.

In the 2022-23 offseason, Suero joined the Dodgers on a minor league deal, making just five MLB appearances while spending most of the year in Triple-A. He later signed with the Astros in 2024, where he again spent most of the season in the minors, appearing once in the majors on April 9.

The Braves signed Suero to a minor league contract in December 2024, and he opened 2025 with Triple-A Gwinnett, recording a 0-2 record, 1.50 ERA, 49 strikeouts, and 11 saves across 36 innings. Atlanta promoted him on July 11, but he struggled in five appearances, posting an 11.37 ERA in 6.1 innings before being released.

While Suero hasn’t been a high-leverage option in recent seasons, his experience could provide a valuable boost to the Mets’ bullpen as they gear up for the playoff stretch.
