Anthony Volpe has continued to be the New York Yankees’ starting shortstop despite having a horrible season. He has been playing with a shoulder ailment, though, and was just given a cortisone shot, according to the team. Because of this, he hasn’t played since last Tuesday, making room for Jose Caballero.

Aaron Boone had stated that he anticipated Volpe being available off the bench for Sunday’s game, while Caballero had started the previous five games. Boone has apparently softened his stance on the starting shortstop problem, and Volpe did not play on Sunday.

Boone has named Volpe his starting shortstop for the whole season. After two games, Volpe regained his starting position despite being benched. He is less dedicated to Volpe today, though. Boone stated, “We’ll do what’s best every day,” according to Dan Martin of the New York Post.

Prior to Monday, Caballero had a.980 OPS and went 6-for-18 in his previous five outings. He has also played good defense and has three stolen bases. He appeared to be a far stronger alternative than Volpe in five straight games as the starting pitcher.

As a Yankee, Caballero was slashing.262/.352/.475 and leading all of baseball in stolen bases going into Monday. Volpe, meanwhile, leads the American League in mistakes and has been a complete mess at the plate.

Volpe’s employment suddenly becomes less secure as the postseason draws near. Caballero is currently making a bigger contribution to the Yankees’ current success, and the team has recently performed better. It’s shocking that Boone is willing to start Caballero after months of supporting Volpe.
