Particularly after their eight-game losing run, which included a four-game sweep in Philadelphia, the New York Mets have been having a difficult month. The pitching staff has contributed to the Mets’ struggles in the second half of the season.

The Mets have made three daring decisions as a result of Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, and Sean Manaea not being their best in the first half. This season, they made bold moves by calling up Nolan McLean, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong—moves that would not have occurred if it weren’t for the rotation issues.

Though there have been some worries that the Mets promoted the young pitchers too soon, they have all found some kind of success. However, Pedro Martinez had a strong opinion about the three rookie promotions in a New York Post article before to the Mets’ alumni game.

Pedro Martinez praises the Mets over McLean, Tong, and Sproat promotions
Martinez remarked, “But I think it’s great to see,” “These youngsters are going to love it. It’s going to create some grit, but it’s sooner than we anticipated.”
The beginning of each Mets rookie pitcher’s Major League career has been a little different. With a 4-1 record and a 1.19 ERA in six outings, McLean has been in control.
Tong has made three starts, pitched five innings and allowed one run, pitched six innings and gave up four runs, and pitched 0.2 innings and gave up six runs.
Sproat, on the other hand, has had two starts, both of which were strong starts. He shut out the Texas Rangers in six innings after giving up three runs in six innings against the Cincinnati Reds.
Although McLean has been the most dominant, they have all enjoyed some success in their little action. Martinez continued by pointing out that a pitcher’s success in their early career may aid them in the future as well as in the near term.
“The good thing is,” Martinez explained, “if they are successful as rookies now, they feel like they can succeed at a very young age by the second year.” That is our goal. We want to watch the young athletes grow swiftly and acquire the perseverance to face setbacks and celebrate victories.”

Every pitcher experiences highs and lows, even the legendary Martinez. Even though Tong had a terrible third appearance, he has demonstrated enough to inspire the Mets in the long run and give him the confidence to start in the Major Leagues.
The Mets are particularly pleased with McLean and Sproat’s solid starts, since they may build on it in 2026 to establish themselves as regular pitchers in the team’s rotation.

According to Martinez, “I think the Mets look bright for the future.” The Mets will have some intriguing pitchers to watch over the next few years in the Major Leagues thanks to the trio of young starters, all of whom will be signed to inexpensive contracts.

Martinez thinks that even with some difficult performances, the perseverance these pitchers will develop will be crucial to their long-term success in the Major Leagues, despite some worries that the Mets are bringing up these players too soon.

The Mets’ season has been saved by the trio of rookie pitchers, who will probably be key members of the team in 2026 and beyond. As Sproat, McLean, and Tong gain experience and “grit” throughout their 2025 Major League stays, Martinez has enjoyed the call-ups thus far.
