One of the biggest goals for the Boston Red Sox this offseason is to strengthen their starting rotation and find reliable arms to support Garrett Crochet. But based on recent comments, the team isn’t just looking for any pitcher — they have a specific type in mind.

Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow made it clear that the Red Sox are focused solely on acquiring pitchers who can “move the needle” at the top of the rotation.

“What we need to do, and what we’ll do over the course of the offseason, is take a step back and really recognize what type of potential pitching additions or acquisitions really move the needle for us, because we do have a strong group of pitching depth,” Breslow explained.

That statement suggests Boston is aiming to land a true No. 1 or No. 2 starter — someone who can serve as a co-ace alongside Crochet. With young arms like Kutter Crawford, Kyle Harrison, Patrick Sandoval, and Payton Tolle already providing solid depth, the front office could target proven frontline talents such as Joe Ryan from the Twins, Dylan Cease from the Padres, or Michael King.

And frankly, that’s the right move. The Red Sox are the fourth-richest franchise in baseball — it’s time they spend like it. Landing one or two elite pitchers would not only solidify their rotation but also send a strong message to the league and fans that Boston is serious about contending in this new era.

Now, all eyes are on Breslow and his staff to see if they can follow through on that promise — and maybe, while they’re at it, bring back Alex Bregman and add another power-hitting righty to complete the puzzle.
