BREAKING: Trent Dilfer Sounds Completely Lost While Trying To Avoid Inevitable Firing From More Losses At UAB

UAB has not yet dismissed Trent Dilfer, with the Blazers giving the second-year head coach a few more weeks to turn things around before what seems like an inevitable departure. It would be surprising if the former Super Bowl champion remains in his position for 2025.

At this point, the only way for Dilfer to keep his job is by winning. Despite the simplicity of that, there appears to be a disconnect within the coaching staff, which has been a major factor in the team’s disappointing season. Dilfer, in particular, seems unable to pinpoint why UAB continues to lose.

On Monday, Dilfer shared that he revisited his approach after his players appeared to give up during another lopsided defeat on Saturday. While practices seem to be going well, the same success isn’t translating to games.

Well, I’m not sure if there’s much to say. Another extremely dismal game. A game that did not represent our week of preparation against a very strong opponent, but that is irrelevant. We didn’t play very well in any of the three phases. I’m disappointed; I feel as if I’ve let down many people. It is my responsibility to have us playing better football, and I have not done it to my satisfaction. My mindset is to change some of the ways I do things in the hopes of getting a greater response from our building.

Everyone in Birmingham is scratching their heads after a 1-5 start. Dilfer is urgently searching for answers on how to turn this thing around quickly.

UAB just needs to break up with Trent Dilfer already

As I mentioned last week, I’ve been on horrible teams where you know you’re bad, practise bad and then play bad. I’ve seen it and been a part of it. I’ve been on teams where you know you’re better, so you practice at a high level and then go out and play exactly as you practiced. This is the first location I’ve been where we practise at a high level yet don’t play anywhere close to that level.

He sounds absolutely lost.

So I’m wondering, “Are we practicing the right way?” It’s something like that. Are our drills transferable? Are our practice sessions transferable? Is the message transferable? Obviously, no, because we are not getting the desired outcomes and are not putting our players in positions to do what they can do in practice on Saturdays.

Given that Dilfer having never coached college football before his hiring, this should not come as a major surprise. The 14-year NFL quarterback has extensive experience teaching with high school quarterbacks through Elite 11 and has won two consecutive state titles at a private high school in Tennessee while competing against lower talent as a team that can recruit. His first 18 games with the Blazers mark his collegiate debut. UAB is 5-13 over those period.

Trent Dilfer appears unlikely to be able to make significant changes in the next six weeks to save his job at the end of the season. He inherited an ascending program and shattered it in less than two years. If the university decides to let him go after December 1, it will owe him a $4.1 million buyout. Begin raising money!
