Cougars’ 4-star top target visits BYU, sets commitment date
BYU received another official visit this past weekend from 4-star 2025 big man. The 6-foot-9 senior began his career at Lone Peak before transferring to Orem HS this season. Chamberlain is a consensus top 150 prospect in the 2025 class, with 4 stars from 247 Sports, On3, and ESPN.
I spoke with Chamberlain about his visit to BYU and his whole recruitment, which you can find here.
**BYU Visit Highlights & Key Takeaways with Chamberlain**
**Highlights from the Visit:**
Chamberlain enjoyed his time with BYU’s team and coaching staff, noting the team’s great camaraderie and the coaches’ clarity on their vision for the program. They outlined where they see the program heading over the next few years, which aligns with his timeline, as he’ll be returning from a mission trip.
**Relationship with Coach Young:**
Chamberlain has a strong relationship with Coach Young and the staff, appreciating the personalized time each coach spent with him. Coach Young also dedicated one-on-one time to analyze Chamberlain’s game, discussing how his skill set fits into BYU’s game plan on both offense and defense.
**Experience Watching BYU’s Scrimmage:**
Attending the scrimmage between BYU and Boise State was a unique experience for Chamberlain. He enjoyed the quieter atmosphere, which allowed him to hear the players and coaches communicating in a way that’s different from typical, noisier games.
**Other Schools & Commitment Timeline:**
After considering other offers, Chamberlain narrowed his choices to BYU and Illinois, the two schools he felt were the best fit for his playing style and showed a genuine interest in him. He aims to make his commitment within the early signing period, ideally in the next few days.
Chamberlain is set to decide between BYU and Illinois after visiting Illinois on the weekend of October 12. BYU has several factors working in its favor: both his parents, Josh and Ashleigh, played basketball at BYU, and his uncle, Chris Burgess, is an assistant coach for the Cougars. With these strong family ties to the school, BYU has a natural appeal.
Chamberlain plans to serve a mission, delaying his enrollment until 2027, which aligns with BYU’s approach to integrating athletes who serve missions before starting their collegiate careers. If he commits, he could become BYU’s first recruit for their 2025 class. BYU’s recruiting efforts continue with other prospects as well, as Xavion Staton is set to visit this weekend and will make his decision next Monday. Additionally, AJ Dybantsa has announced that he will decide “soon,” and JJ Mandaquit has mentioned he intends to commit after returning to Hawaii in December.
