Minnesota twins shock fans by declining multiple trade options, terminates $12 million slugger’s contract
The Minnesota Twins offseason began weeks ago. However, the formal start of the MLB offseason occurred immediately following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series victory. That means the calendar immediately turns to 2025, and roster construction can begin. The greatest domino to fall in Minnesota was regarding a player who is no longer employed.
Seattle Mariners make Jorge Polanco a free agent
Derek Falvey traded Jorge Polanco to the Seattle Mariners last summer, citing a tight salary. Ownership reduced the entire outlay by $30 million, and Polanco became an expendable commodity, resulting in asset reallocation. Of course, the transaction failed for everyone involved, but he is also leaving the Mariners.
Polanco may have faced an adjustment period with his new team, but age and repeated knee surgeries could also be factors. Lower body issues have limited him to fewer than 118 games each season over the last three years. It will be interesting to see what kind of contract the 31-year-old secures in his first free agency.
On another note: Could Juan Soto really end up with the Minnesota Twins?
Polanco’s 93 OPS+ was respectable, though he’s not strong defensively. A one-year contract with a potential option might be his best path forward.
Minnesota Twins decline multiple options as well
The Mariners’ future plans for Polanco were undetermined. Minnesota’s team options for Manuel Margot and Kyle Farmer were clear. Each were denied, as predicted.
Last season, the Twins overreached by awarding Farmer a whopping $6.3 million in arbitration. He has been an important member of the clubhouse, but it appeared that the free market dictated a trade for half that amount, at most. He struggled throughout the season, finishing with an OPS+ of just 82. At least we’ll always have this enjoyable home run.
