The Sun Devils continued preparation for UCF despite some of their key leaders being limited in Wednesday’s practice. Here are notes and observations from Arizona State’s Wednesday practice ahead of its Saturday game against UCF. Media members were allowed to watch most of the session, which lasted about two hours and was conducted in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) before it ended with a walkthrough period at the Kajikawa Practice Fields. Note: We are unable to report which players were not observed at practice per ASU football policy. Returned to practice: None. Injuries: Junior linebacker Keyshaun Elliott suffered a stinger — an injury to nerves in the neck and shoulder — that will cause him to miss ASU’s game against UCF, head coach Kenny Dillingham said Wednesday. Senior running back Cam Skattebo’s “doubtful to questionable” status for UCF due to an undisclosed injury has not changed since Monday, Dillingham said Wednesday.

Redshirt sophomore running back Raleek Brown will seek a medical redshirt for a lingering hamstring injury that he suffered in preseason camp, Dillingham said. He has worked with ASU’s scout team throughout the week. Sophomore nickel Cole Martin is out for the season for surgery “on a few items that have been lingering since he got here,” Dillingham said. Senior defensive lineman Anthonie Cooper (ACL tear in April) is expected to miss much of the season, at minimum, but he has worn pads over the previous two weeks as he continued his rehab. Sophomore offensive tackle Jalen Klemm, who is out for an undetermined length of time due to a health-related issue, has been observed in attendance as a non-participant in recent weeks. Some players did not participate Wednesday, but we can’t report specifics on injuries observed due to Arizona State’s policy. . — Keyshaun Elliott is out with a stinger — an injury to nerves in the neck and shoulder — for ASU’s Saturday game against UCF, head coach Kenny Dillingham said. Elliott has practiced all week but has not taken an 11-on-11 snap. There is an expectation that the linebackers will rotate more throughout the game with Elliott out, according to Dillingham. — Senior running back Cam Skattebo’s status is still “doubtful to questionable” due to an undisclosed injury that has kept him off the practice fields. If Skattebo does not play, more reps will be given to sophomore running back Kyson Brown and senior running back DeCarlos Brooks. Brown is coming off an impressive performance at Oklahoma State, which included his first two rushing touchdowns of his career. “So having [Skattebo’s] availability to be day-to-day is something we have to work through,” offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo said. “I think it’s actually a good thing. I think you need that as a team at certain times, challenging certain guys to step up and take place. You need to see where you’re at without guys. You’re going to be without them soon enough. So at some point, that’s got to happen. So I think it’s a good challenge for us. We’ve got to be able to build a game plan around not having him. If we get him, great. If we don’t, then you go with it. — Senior offensive tackle Emmit Bohle took first-team reps at right guard Wednesday. Junior guard Kyle Scott, who has started at right guard over senior Cade Briggs, has not taken 11-on-11 reps ahead of ASU’s contest against UCF. Bohle has never been observed taking guard reps at ASU in sessions open to the media, working at either tackle position.

He competed with junior tackle Josh Atkins for the team’s starting left tackle position, which Bohle has rotated with Atkins during games. “Just moving him around,” offensive line coach Saga Tuitele said. “We’ve got six starters, and just making sure that if something happens inside, that Emmit can be the sixth guy with some injuries and stuff like that might happen too. I just want to be prepared for anything, and he’s a guy that’s smart enough to do it and is physical enough. And like I said, you’ve got six guys that — really seven when counting Cade — that can play. And just want to make sure that we got everything covered if things go bad, whether it’s in (this) game or next week.”. — Junior defensive end Clayton Smith asked cornerbacks coach Bryan Carrington to throw a ball that he could catch during a ball security drill. Carrington, with a smirk on his face, threw a high-arcing deep ball about 15 yards from where Smith was standing. He wasn’t able to snag the pigskin, so he picked it up and ran it back to Carrington. On Smith’s next rep, he asked Carrington to throw the ball again. Except this time, Carrington threw the ball five yards in front of Smith, who had no chance at catching the ball before it spiked off the ground. The two laughed as the horn sounded to rotate stations. — Scouts from the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints attended Wednesday’s practice.
