Josh Allen led the Buffalo Bills to a playoff berth with a dominant 35-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night, highlighted by a historic play that caught Patrick Mahomes’ attention.

In the third quarter, with snow falling at Highmark Stadium, Allen threw a short pass to Amari Cooper, who seemed poised to be tackled as three 49ers defenders closed in. Instead, Cooper lateraled the ball back to Allen, who sprinted to the left and dove to hit the pylon for a seven-yard touchdown.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reacted to the play on social media, posting, “That was lit!” with a laughing emoji and fire icons. The trick play made Allen only the fourth player in NFL history to record a passing and receiving touchdown on the same play. The last time this occurred was in January 2018, when Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans pulled it off in a wild-card game against Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. At the time, Mahomes was a rookie backup watching from the sidelines as Alex Smith started for the Chiefs.

With the win, the Bills secured the top spot in the AFC East and joined the Chiefs in the playoffs. The 49ers, meanwhile, face a tougher road to the postseason. Currently last in the NFC West at 5-7, they trail division leaders Seattle by two games. Adding to their struggles, star running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a knee injury in the game that is expected to end his season.

The 49ers will aim to keep their playoff hopes alive when they host the Chicago Bears this Sunday, while the Bills head west to face the Los Angeles Rams in California.
