The Philadelphia Phillies, coming off a 95-67 season and their first National League East title since 2011, are facing a potential roster shakeup after an early postseason exit. One of the most intriguing possibilities is the addition of Houston Astros slugger Alex Bregman, as the team looks to solidify its lineup for 2025.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has emphasized a flexible approach to offseason moves. Speaking in October, he noted the team’s strong foundation while remaining open to trades and other opportunities:

“We have a lot of good players,” Dombrowski said via MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “I think we just have to be open-minded to exploring what’s out there for us… Sometimes you trade good players for good players.”

One area ripe for change is third base. While Alec Bohm earned his first All-Star selection in 2024 with a career-high 97 RBIs, his struggles in the postseason (a .220 OPS in the NLDS against the Mets) and swirling trade rumors could leave the Phillies in search of an upgrade at the position. Enter Alex Bregman.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer identified the Phillies as a potential suitor for Bregman, alongside the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers. Known for his playoff pedigree, the two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion has played in 99 postseason games since debuting in 2016. Adding Bregman would bring both consistency and star power to Philadelphia’s roster.

Alex Bregman Sparks Debate Regarding $30 Million Average Annual Value

The price tag for Bregman is expected to be steep. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projects a seven-year, $189 million deal for the 30-year-old. While a significant investment, such a move could make sense for the Phillies, who have World Series aspirations and have not hoisted the trophy since 2008. Swapping Bohm for Bregman could be the bold step the team needs to take the next leap.
