There is some uncertainty surrounding the potential addition of Alabama defensive tackle Damon Payne Jr. to Michigan’s defensive line. On3’s Pete Nakos initially reported that Payne had signed with Michigan, and Wolverines coaching staff members, including Lou Esposito and LaMar Morgan, appeared to celebrate the news on social media. However, Morgan’s post has since been deleted, and Payne’s paperwork was reportedly vetoed, leaving his move unconfirmed.

Steven Fantetti of Athlete Empowering Agency, representing Payne, issued a statement clarifying that Payne has not officially signed with any program yet and plans to announce his commitment on his own terms.

Payne, a 6-foot-4, 313-pound Belleville, Michigan native, was a five-star recruit in the 2021 class. After choosing Alabama, Payne gradually earned playing time, going from 61 snaps in 2022 to 154 in 2023, and ultimately reaching 288 snaps in 2024. Over his three years with the Crimson Tide, Payne recorded 21 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, five pressures, and three quarterback hurries. While not flashy, his consistency and reliability stand out—he has missed only three tackles and has been penalized just once during his time at Alabama.

With key defensive linemen like Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant potentially heading to the NFL, Payne would be a valuable addition to Michigan’s 2025 roster. His disciplined play style and durability could provide much-needed depth and experience.

The Wolverines are hopeful they can finalize this deal and bring Payne to Ann Arbor. Stay tuned for updates on this situation and other transfer portal developments for Michigan.
