Before the March 8, 2024 Trade Deadline arrives, Noah Hanifin is poised to switch teams, as the Calgary Flames couldn’t secure him for a long-term contract as initially anticipated, indicating his imminent departure from the organization.

Hanifin, a consistent presence as a top-four defenseman for the Flames over numerous seasons, is currently enjoying the peak of his performance in the 2023-24 season. While offense hasn’t traditionally been his primary focus, he is currently on track to tally 47 points, just one shy of his career-best achieved in 2021-22. His defensive prowess has also been outstanding, earning him the trust of head coach Ryan Huska to play in all game situations.

Hanifin’s offensive prowess was evident on Saturday night (Feb. 24) when he scored two goals and notched three points in the Flames’ 6-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, while also leading the team with 25:05 of ice time. This standout performance comes at a time when he’s under significant scrutiny and could have significant implications for the Flames.

Hanifin is the Best Defenceman Available

Ahead of the trade deadline, numerous playoff-contending teams in the league are seeking upgrades to bolster their defensive lines, and it’s widely acknowledged that Hanifin stands out as the premier option available. Should the 27-year-old defenseman consent to a sign-and-trade deal, the Flames could potentially secure a significant return.

In a recent transaction, the Flames orchestrated a remarkable deal orchestrated by general manager Craig Conroy, acquiring Andrei Kuzmenko, prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo, a 2024 first-round pick, and a conditional fourth-round pick from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Elias Lindholm. This transaction yielded an impressive haul for the Flames, particularly considering Lindholm’s struggles on the ice, with nine goals and 32 points in 49 games.

Contrarily, Hanifin has been excelling this season, drawing increased attention following a standout performance on Saturday night. With his impressive form, the Flames are poised to receive an even more lucrative package in exchange for him than they did for Lindholm. If Hanifin agrees to a sign-and-trade arrangement, the Flames could potentially acquire a promising prospect, high-value draft picks, and an established NHL player. Moreover, should he maintain his elite level of play throughout his remaining tenure with the Flames, the potential return in any deal may further escalate.

Tanev Also Solid Against Oilers

Chris Tanev emerged as another standout performer against the Oilers, boasting a commendable plus-3 rating over more than 21 minutes of play, alongside blocking four shots. His significant contribution aided the Flames in thwarting two out of three power play opportunities for the Oilers, with the 34-year-old proving pivotal in this defensive success.

Despite Tanev’s age and limited offensive prowess, he isn’t expected to attract as substantial a trade return as Hanifin. The Flames are reportedly hesitant to trade him unless they receive a first-round pick in return, and standout performances like the one on Saturday could bolster their bargaining position. Interestingly, there are rumors linking Tanev to the Oilers, raising speculation about whether Oilers GM Ken Holland might consider sacrificing their 2024 first-round pick to secure a deal.

Flames Continuing to Stay in the Race

Despite the considerable distractions surrounding the Flames this season, they have effectively tuned them out and are currently exhibiting some of their finest hockey performances. Their victory on Saturday signifies a streak of four consecutive wins. Although they trail the Nashville Predators by five points for a wild-card spot, they also have an extra game yet to be played. Whether they will secure a playoff berth remains uncertain, but their determination to compete fiercely is evident.
