The New York Yankees have a void to fill at second base after Gleyber Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers. Torres mentioned, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, that he felt the Yankees had other priorities and he wasn’t among them. Now, the Yankees must address their need for a replacement.

One internal option is moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base or relying on D.J. LeMahieu. However, FanSided’s James Nolan suggested the Yankees could explore trading for San Diego Padres star Luis Arraez. A three-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, and three-time batting champion, Arraez has claimed consecutive batting titles with three different teams. A trade to New York could set the stage for him to aim for a fourth title with a fourth team.

Spotrac projects Arraez to secure a nine-year, $154 million contract when he becomes a free agent after this season. While not known for elite defense, with 307 career starts at second base and a minus-seven outs above average, his offensive prowess makes him an attractive option. The Yankees also need a strong leadoff hitter, and Arraez’s stats fit the bill. Nolan highlighted that in 409 career games batting leadoff, Arraez boasts a .323 batting average and a .364 on-base percentage. His performance with runners in scoring position is even more impressive, with a .369 average.

Luis Arraez makes Padres history in debut with team

With the Padres potentially looking to trade Arraez before he enters free agency, the Yankees might seize the opportunity. While the cost would likely involve significant prospects, the Yankees’ current World Series window could justify the move. As Nolan wrote, “The Yankees have one of the best pitching staffs in MLB with Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Luis Gil, but their lineup could use one more piece. Arraez leading off in 2025 would perfectly complement Aaron Judge and the rest of the team’s sluggers.”
