BOOOOM!!! Mark Pope attributes Wildcats’ success to a strong bond, highlighted by birthday surprise for Kerr Kriisa
The Kentucky Wildcats used three crucial scoring runs—two in the first half and one in the second—to secure their first SEC victory of the season against the Florida Gators. Head coach Mark Pope attributed the team’s success to their strong sense of camaraderie and togetherness, exemplified by lighthearted moments like surprising injured guard Kerr Kriisa for his birthday.
“I know it sounds soft, but I really believe these runs come from the team being together,” Pope said. “All of my guys snuck into Kerr Kriisa’s apartment after celebrating his birthday to scare him and surprise him. Here’s a guy struggling because he can’t play, and they came together like kids to cheer him up. That bond translates onto the court.”
Kriisa has been sidelined since sustaining an injury during the game against Gonzaga on December 7. He underwent surgery shortly after and was given a six-week recovery timeline, alleviating initial concerns of a season-ending injury. If the timeline holds, Kriisa could return in late January.
Before the Florida game, Pope provided a cautious update on Kriisa’s status. “We’ll see how it goes. It’s a significant injury, so it’s going to take time,” Pope said.
Prior to his injury, Kriisa was averaging 5.5 points and 3.8 assists in 17.3 minutes per game. As he works toward a return, the team remains hopeful that he can contribute in his final year of eligibility.
Pope emphasized the importance of the Wildcats’ unity, not only in supporting Kriisa but also in delivering strong performances on the court. The team’s bond has been a cornerstone of their success and positions them well as they gear up for the remainder of the season and the postseason ahead.
