“WE BACK!!!!!,” Jones said in a post on X shortly after midnight on March 12, the day after the legal tampering period began.

Jones had been one of the Bills’ top free agents and an anchor of their defense in 2023 until sustaining a damaged pectoral muscle and missing a significant portion of the season. With his return, the Bills bring back a high-impact player while also addressing one of the team’s most pressing defensive needs.

Bills Land DaQuan Jones on Two-Year Deal

Jones was one of the premier defensive linemen in the league until he got injured last season, making 2.5 sacks and three tackles for a loss in seven games. Pro Football Focus awarded Jones a 90.5 overall grade for the season, ranking him fifth among all defensive linemen.

Re-signing Jones was considered a top priority for the Bills this offseason. According to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, if Jones were to leave in free agency, the Bills would lack a starting option at one technique defensive lineman, making it crucial to retain the veteran tackle. Buscaglia highlighted that Jones is a perfect fit for the Bills in 2024 as he provides essential defensive support while still being cost-effective. Given his age of 32 and recent injury, his market value is likely to be lower. He excelled in the Bills’ defensive scheme, which enhances his value to the team. Moreover, his performance could lead to a chance for a more lucrative contract next offseason. Among all the re-signing options, Jones is deemed the most crucial for the upcoming season.

Bills Tending to Their Defense

While the Bills didn’t make any major moves on the first day of legal tampering before the new league year, they focused on bolstering their defense. The team announced an agreement with defensive end A.J. Epenesa on a two-year deal. Epenesa is coming off his best season yet, matching his career-high in sacks (6.5) and achieving career-highs in tackles (20), passes defended (8), and interceptions (2).

Additionally, the Bills re-signed versatile defensive back Cam Lewis, who might see an increased role next season following the departure of safety Jordan Poyer and the expected loss of fellow safety Micah Hyde. Lewis, who played in all 17 games last season, contributed 16 total tackles and two passes defended. He showcased his ability to play multiple positions in the secondary and was a consistent presence on special teams, as highlighted on the team’s official website.
