In 2024, Tyler Soderstrom, a former top prospect, faces the challenge of earning his spot back with the Oakland A’s. Given his potential, finding a role for him on the Opening Day roster was always going to be a balancing act. Despite his talent, backing up Shea Langeliers at catcher wouldn’t afford him much playing time.

Furthermore, with Ryan Noda at first base and Brent Rooker as designated hitter, Soderstrom’s options were limited. The A’s recently announced that Soderstrom has been sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas to start the season. This move will allow him to gain consistent playing time and focus on improving his defensive skills behind the plate.

With Carlos Pérez and Kyle McCann also vying for spots, the A’s have decisions to make regarding their catching situation. Pérez, who served as the team’s backup last season, and McCann, seeking his MLB debut, are in contention.

Additionally, the A’s reassigned several non-roster invitees to their minor league camp, including Armando Alvarez, Max Muncy, Daz Cameron, and Max Schuemann. Among the remaining non-roster invitees are outfielder Hoy Park, catcher prospects, and reliever Tyler Ferguson.

Ferguson, despite not yet making his MLB debut, has shown promise in spring training with his impeccable performance on the mound. He’s previously been with the Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks before joining the A’s.

Why the A's sent Tyler Soderstrom back to Triple-A

As the roster takes shape, the A’s have 35 players remaining in camp, with a majority on the 40-man roster. However, with limitations on the number of pitchers allowed on the roster, tough decisions lie ahead, especially considering the current injuries to Scott Alexander, Freddy Tarnok, and Luis Medina.
