ESPN: Hurricanes Land Former 5-Star QB from ACC Rival via Transfer Portal
While the transfer portal has limited options for quality quarterbacks, the destination of one former Miami Hurricanes QB has now been confirmed for 2025. Tyler Van Dyke, who left Miami to join the Wisconsin Badgers before the 2024 season, faced an unfortunate turn of events in Madison, suffering a torn ACL early in the year. His time with the Badgers was short-lived, and after announcing his departure from Wisconsin last month, speculation began about his next move.
On Thursday morning, Van Dyke revealed he’ll be transferring to SMU for the 2025 season. SMU had a standout 2024 season, reaching the College Football Playoff and competing in the ACC Championship Game. Now, Van Dyke will look to make an impact, though he’ll face competition from Kevin Jennings, who had a standout year as SMU’s starting quarterback in 2024.
Former Miami and Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke has signed with SMU
Over his four seasons with Miami, Tyler Van Dyke, a four-star recruit from the 2020 class, threw for 7,469 yards and 54 touchdowns. After transferring to Wisconsin, Van Dyke’s season took a tough turn when he tore his ACL in a season-opening loss to Alabama, ending his time with the Badgers prematurely. Although there was a chance he could return to Wisconsin, Van Dyke chose to enter the transfer portal, and SMU will be his next destination.
As for Miami, the quarterback situation remains uncertain for 2025. With star QB Cam Ward heading to the NFL—likely to be the No. 1 overall pick—Miami’s QB1 is still up in the air. Emory Williams will be considered, but concerns about his performance in the Pop-Tarts Bowl persist. There’s speculation that Miami may pursue other portal options (Carson Beck or Quinn Ewers), but that won’t be clear until after the College Football Playoff concludes. Meanwhile, Van Dyke will play a pivotal role in helping SMU continue its momentum, and when the two teams meet, Miami’s defense will be determined to make a statement.
