The New York Mets are dissatisfied with how their negotiations with Pete Alonso have progressed and are now preparing for the possibility of moving forward without him.

Mets: David Stearns opens up on Pete Alonso situation

Mets president David Stearns shared his thoughts on the team’s ongoing negotiations with Pete Alonso, expressing frustration with the process:

“I will never say no. There’s always the possibility. But the reality is we’re moving forward, and we continue to bring in players. As we do, it becomes increasingly difficult to fit Pete into what is already a very expensive roster. That’s where we are.

“I’m being brutally honest—I don’t like the negotiations or what’s been presented to us. Maybe things will change, and I’ll remain open to that. But if they don’t, we’ll need to come to terms with moving forward with the players we currently have.”

Mets as unrelenting as Alonso to step off of stance

Pete Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, have remained steadfast in their pursuit of a long-term contract, while the Mets are reportedly more interested in a shorter deal, around three years. So far, neither side has found common ground.

At 30 years old and in his prime, Alonso recognizes this may be his best chance to secure a lucrative, long-term deal. While his position is understandable, the market for first basemen has weakened, and the Mets are pragmatically preparing for the future without him if necessary.

As the offseason progresses, it will become clear whether Alonso and the Mets can reconcile or if their paths will permanently diverge. From David Stearns’ perspective, the Mets remain focused on building a World Series-caliber team—whether Alonso is part of it or not.
