According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Cubs have emerged as the favorites to sign two-time All-Star Alex Bregman, with the Astros seemingly moving on from their longtime third baseman.

“They’ve put themselves in a great position,” Heyman said. “They’ve already acquired Tucker and Pressly, two of Bregman’s former teammates. I’m sure they’re in Jed Hoyer’s ear, talking him up. Not that they need to—he’s an elite all-around player. Whether it’s a six-year deal or a four-year contract with opt-outs, I think the Cubs have a real shot at landing Bregman.”

Bregman reportedly declined a six-year, $156 million offer to stay in Houston, leaving questions about whether the Cubs would be willing to surpass that figure or if Bregman might consider a lower deal.

Over his nine seasons with the Astros, Bregman compiled an .848 OPS, 132 OPS+, 191 home runs, 265 doubles, 694 runs scored, and a 39.6 bWAR, playing a key role in two World Series championships.
