Albert Abreu is officially a Cincinnati Red. After reports last week indicated an agreement was in place, the team has now finalized the deal, bringing the right-handed reliever back to MLB after a season in Japan.

Abreu posted a 2.39 ERA over 49 innings in 52 appearances last year in Japan, striking out 33 and walking 20 (three intentionally). While the ERA looks strong, Japan’s league was especially pitcher-friendly in 2024, with a league-average ERA of 3.04.

Before heading overseas, Abreu pitched in the big leagues from 2020-2023 with the Royals, Rangers, and Yankees, compiling a 4.58 ERA over 135.2 innings with 136 strikeouts and 78 walks.

Cincinnati has invited Abreu to big league spring training, bringing their total to 59 players in camp—31 of them pitchers. Among them, veterans Wade Miley, Julian Aguiar, and Brandon Williamson won’t be available due to injury, with Miley expected to return around May following Tommy John surgery.

Though pitchers and catchers officially report to Goodyear next week, some players have already arrived at the facility to get a head start on preparations.
