Former Alabama standout makes surprising admission why he left Crimson Tide for Ohio State which sparks controversy after Saban’s retirement
Ohio State took an aggressive approach in the transfer portal last year, securing several key contributors. While the Buckeyes’ national championship roster was primarily composed of returning players, their transfers fit in seamlessly.
The biggest addition was Caleb Downs, widely regarded as the best defensive player in the country. Running back Quinshon Judkins was another major pickup from Ole Miss, rushing for 1,000 yards alongside TreVeyon Henderson.
One under-the-radar yet significant addition was Alabama center Seth McLaughlin. The 2024 Rimington Trophy winner was among three Alabama players who transferred to Ohio State following Nick Saban’s retirement, joining Downs and expected 2025 starting quarterback Julian Sayin.
McLaughlin entered the transfer portal after Alabama’s Rose Bowl loss to Michigan. On The Cube Show with Cole Cubelic, he explained his decision, citing stagnation in his development. He also recalled facing intense criticism, including having his address leaked on social media. Despite Saban’s efforts to keep him, McLaughlin felt it was best to move on.

It’s rare to hear a player express concerns about development at Alabama, making his comments notable. Unfortunately, McLaughlin’s season with Ohio State was cut short by an Achilles injury before the Michigan game. Still, he was a crucial part of the Buckeyes’ offensive line, earning recognition as the nation’s top center.
During his time at Alabama, McLaughlin graduated in just 2.5 years and started 24 games over three seasons. His 2023 campaign was marked by snapping struggles, possibly linked to quarterback Jalen Milroe, which may have contributed to his departure.
Despite the setbacks, McLaughlin’s decision paid off. He leaves college football as an elite center and is set to be drafted in April. As he recovers from his injury, he is expected to make his NFL debut next season.
