The Colts are expected to bring in competition for their young quarterback, Anthony Richardson. Several names, including Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, and Mac Jones, have been linked to the team. So why not Daniel Jones? While he may not be a marquee star, the former first-round pick could provide Richardson with solid competition in 2025.

His Career Thus Far
Daniel Jones played college football at Duke, where he redshirted his first year before starting for three seasons. He was named MVP of the 2017 Quick Lane Bowl after throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 86 yards and a score. In his senior year, he earned MVP honors in the 2018 Independence Bowl, passing for 423 yards and five touchdowns. Jones also impressed at the 2019 Senior Bowl, where he was named MVP after recording 115 passing yards and a touchdown.
The New York Giants selected Jones with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He began his rookie season as Eli Manning’s backup but took over as the starter in Week 3. In his debut start, Jones threw for 336 yards with a 112.7 passer rating, adding two passing touchdowns, 28 rushing yards, and two rushing scores in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He became the first Giants rookie quarterback to win his first career start since Scott Brunner in 1980 and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
In 2022, Jones posted career highs with 3,205 passing yards, 708 rushing yards, and seven rushing touchdowns while throwing for 15 touchdowns. He led the Giants to the playoffs, where they fell to the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round. His performance earned him a four-year, $160 million contract extension with New York.
However, Jones was benched and eventually released by the Giants on November 22, 2024. A week later, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings but never played a game while serving as Sam Darnold’s backup.
Why the Colts Should Sign Him
Anthony Richardson, the Colts’ fourth overall pick in 2023, has yet to live up to his franchise quarterback potential. With his development still a work in progress, Indianapolis must bring in a player who can challenge him and help elevate his game.
It remains uncertain who the Colts will target, but acquiring Aaron Rodgers would be a mistake. The 41-year-old quarterback is set to part ways with the Jets this offseason, but his age and off-field distractions make him an ill-fitting choice for Indianapolis. The Colts already tried bringing in an aging veteran with Matt Ryan, and that experiment didn’t end well.
Daniel Jones, at 27, offers a much younger alternative. After losing his starting role in New York, he’ll be eager to prove he can still lead an NFL team. He could push Richardson in training camp, potentially winning the job or providing a solid backup option in case of injury. While Jones may not be the Colts’ top choice, he’s a player they should seriously consider signing.
