REPORT: Mariners’ Jerry Dipoto reveals major stance on playing prospects to start 2025 season
The Mariners’ second base job is shaping up to be a competitive spot this spring, with Dylan Moore initially seen as the favorite. However, both Leo Rivas and Ryan Bliss are in the mix, and there’s a possibility that top prospect Cole Young could force his way into the competition. Mariners president Jerry Dipoto indicated that the team is open to promoting any young player who shows they can make an immediate impact. With Young, 21, being highly regarded as the No. 2 prospect in the Mariners’ system, he might be able to push for a spot sooner rather than later, even if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster.
As for Rivas and Bliss, Dipoto mentioned the potential for having a versatile backup infielder. Rivas, who can play shortstop and switch-hit, could have the edge over Bliss for that role, providing depth in multiple positions.

Seattle also re-signed Jorge Polanco, despite his struggles in 2024, hoping that the veteran can rebound in his second year with the team, particularly with the tough hitting conditions at T-Mobile Park.
Overall, the Mariners’ offseason was quieter than expected, but they still have enough talent to remain in the playoff hunt for 2025. How they stack up against the top of the AL West is still uncertain, but they’re definitely building a team with depth and potential, especially with the youth coming up in their system.
