The St. Louis Cardinals had an active offseason, making a strong effort to trade star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Despite their attempts, a deal never materialized. Arenado provided a list of five teams he would consider waiving his no-trade clause for, and other teams also expressed interest.

One of those teams was the Houston Astros, but Arenado ultimately exercised his no-trade clause to block the move. According to The Athletic’s Katie Woo, he wanted more time to evaluate his market.

Both the Cardinals and Astros believed the trade would address key needs and were eager to finalize it. However, Arenado began having doubts about Houston as a fit. Cardinals president John Mozeliak gave him the weekend to decide, but by Monday, he was still uncertain.

While he didn’t rule out the Astros entirely, he wanted to see how his market developed, particularly in relation to Alex Bregman’s free agency. Additionally, Arenado didn’t want to uproot his family, including his 2-year-old daughter, unless he was fully confident in the decision.

With no trade finalized, Arenado remains with the Cardinals, at least for now.
