The New York Giants can’t afford to place all their hopes on just one quarterback this offseason, so they’re likely to pursue at least two. With the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, New York is expected to target Cam Ward from Miami or Shedeur Sanders from Colorado, should either or both slip past the Tennessee Titans at No. 1 and the Cleveland Browns at No. 2. However, the draft doesn’t start until late April, while free agency kicks off in mid-March. Since there’s no guarantee that either Ward or Sanders will be available, or that either can immediately step in and save the jobs of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, the Giants will need to sign a veteran quarterback next month. This veteran needs to be someone who can help them win games right away.

This brings us to Russell Wilson of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had a solid season, although it declined toward the end. Pittsburgh’s five-game losing streak to close the season, which included a playoff loss, wasn’t entirely his fault. The Giants have a star wide receiver in Malik Nabers, who is better than any pass-catcher the Steelers had in 2024, making it easier for New York to consider Wilson if he’s open to a short-term contract. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin predicted on February 20 that the Giants will likely sign the nine-time Pro Bowler to a one-year, $20 million deal in the coming weeks.

“His days of dominating as the dual-threat star of the Seattle Seahawks are behind him, but Wilson still showed flashes of his deep-ball ability midway through 2024,” Benjamin wrote. “He’s clearly still a capable play-action passer, but without the elusiveness of his younger years, it’s tough to see anyone betting on him as more than a one-year rental, and even then, he’ll likely have to compete for the job.”
