Former Michigan offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell has found a new role under a familiar leader. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Campbell has been hired as an offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Chargers, reuniting with former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Campbell’s time at Michigan ended on a sour note despite early promise. Less than a week after the Wolverines managed to defeat Ohio State while scoring just 13 points, he was dismissed. Tight ends coach Steve Casula took over as interim offensive coordinator before Sherrone Moore later hired Chip Lindsey for the role last month.

To be fair, Michigan’s offense lost significant talent from the unit that helped secure a national championship. However, Campbell struggled to make the offense functional. The Wolverines finished the regular season ranked 124th out of 133 in total offense, 129th in passing (133.6 yards per game), 69th in rushing (160.7 yards per game), and 112th in scoring (22.2 points per game).

Some might argue Campbell was working with limited resources, especially given Michigan’s instability at quarterback. Still, the team had enough talent to suggest that poor play-calling, predictable sequences, and a lack of creativity contributed to the struggles. While Campbell wasn’t solely responsible for Michigan’s offensive shortcomings, a change was necessary.

Now, he gets a fresh start in Los Angeles with Harbaugh. His PR narrative credits him with playing a “key role” in J.J. McCarthy’s development during Michigan’s championship run. Meanwhile, the Wolverines have moved forward with Lindsey, who has already outlined his vision for the offense, including the highly touted five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood.

Best of luck to Campbell with the Chargers. Maybe he can help Justin Herbert finally live up to the hype—just as long as he isn’t calling the plays.
